This Cabernet Merlot comes from Oliver and Osoyoos Vineyarsds in the Okanagan Valley. This blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc is spicy with red currant and cherry aromas, with added complexity and layers of vanilla and wild sage from oak barrel aging.
Merlot and Cabernet Franc provide backbone to Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure with a touch of Petit Verdot for extra body and tannins. Red cherry and cassis aromas are on the nose and extend through to the first sip. Sage, vanilla, lavender, and sandalwood notes intermingle. Eleven months of oak barrel aging complete the lingering finish.
2011 can be characterized as a year that let us enjoy the early days of spring and stretched well into fall. Because of the cool start and rainfall in late spring, the vineyard team proactively managed the aggressive vine growth. The heat spells in August and September were some of the highest recorded extending the grape ripening period through September. Grapes were finally harvested at the end of September for the white varietals and early November for the reds. Most unusual as, often times, there is already a layer of snow on the ground by then. Mother Nature provided us with grapes that resulted in wines that are pungent with fruit and a balanced acidity.
Food Pairing Notes
This Cabernet Merlot blend is perfectly suited for hearty dishes, especially those with olives, mushrooms, or thyme. Enjoy with duck served over polenta, braised beef ribs, pasta with Bolognese sauce, Asiago cheese, or eggplant Parmesan.
