Weekly Website Feature: Barcardi Limon 750ml

ONLY 22.99
With waiting for that sun to shine, this citrus flavored white rum is perfect for a fresh twist to an everyday cocktail.
Some cocktails that you may want to try adding a twist too are:

  • Daiquiri

  • Lemon drop

  • Mojito

  • Pina coldas

Their rum is made with molasses and a single strain of yeast, Le Levadura Bacardi that is fermented for 30 hours in closed fermentation tanks.  The fermented molasses is split with some column distilled and some beer distilled.  Each is aged separately in charred American white oak barrels previously used to age bourbon.  Once mature the rums are blended and filtered through a mix of charcoal made from tropical woods and coconut shells.  Natural flavors are then infused before bottling in Jacksonville Florida. The aroma is lemon curd with lemon candy.  The sweet lemon yogurt entry builds to a tart lemon peak.  Bacardi Limon fades with lemon cheesecake flavor and finishes with lemon hard candy taste, a mild peppery sting, a burn as I swallow, and a flash of heat.  There is a bitter lemon peel and rum aftertaste.  Bacardi Limon provides a nice range of lemon flavor without being oversweet, and while not smooth enough to drink on the rocks, it will make a good base for a tasty cocktail

The newest addition to our vintage room.

In most fine restaurants, Italian wines take up a good chunk of space on the wine lists. That’s particularly true of Tuscan wines with household names such as Ornellaia that embody the region’s rolling hills and the character of its people.

The desire to nurture the Estate’s exceptional qualities has shaped Ornellaia’s philosophy since the beginning. Ornellaia is a cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot and the faithful expression of unique terroir developed in harmony with nature.

45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot

“What appeared to be a disadvantage for the 2013 vintage – late budding and flowering – proved to be a major advantage thanks to a warm summer and month of September offering textbook conditions for harvesting, with cool temperatures but a prevalence of sunny weather. This resulted in slow but complete ripening with great balance and a delightful aromatic quality, which we like to define as “Elegance”. Ornellaia 2013, with its dense, vibrant colour, has a nose of splendid aromatic complexity built around a limpid and brilliant fruitiness, underscored by refined spicy and balsamic notes. The mouth develops vibrant and complex fruity nuances framed by a dense, slender structure with tannins that attain a rare harmony between firmness and fleshiness, concluding with a long balanced and fresh finish.” Axel Heinz - May 2015

On the nose, fine aromas of bell pepper, with black cherry and ripe cassis fruit character. Earth, gunpowder and star anise complement its bouquet. On the mouth, this Ornellaia has power, depth and balance with fine tannins. Ready to drink now but it will continue to reveal more within the next two decades. ***** 98/100

Celebrating International Sauvignon Blanc Day at 30th!

Sauvignon blanc is a green-skinned grape variety that originates from the Bordeaux region of France. The grape likely gets its name from the French words sauvage ("wild") and blanc ("white") due to its early origins as an indigenous grape in South West France.

Depending on the climate, the flavor can range from aggressively grassy to sweetly tropical. In cooler climates, the grape has a tendency to produce wines with noticeable acidity and "green flavors" of grass, green bell peppers and nettles with some tropical fruit (such as passion fruit) and floral (such as elderflower) notes. In warmer climates, it can develop more tropical fruit notes but risk losing a lot of aromatics from over-ripeness, leaving only slight grapefruit and tree fruit (such as peach) notes.

We are tasting three Sauvignon Blanc wines in 30th Street Liquor Store Friday, May 5th from 1pm-4pm. Come in and try them!

The first Pinot Gris grapes in Canada.

One of the original five estate wineries that pioneered the BC Wine Industry, the Heiss family now owns and farms 75 acres strategically planted throughout the Okanagan Valley.

The Heiss family is proud to remain as British Columbia's oldest family owned and operated winery. The founders, George and Trudy, recently celebrated three monumental milestones: 34 years of winemaking, 44 years of grape growing and 54 years of marriage.

A true family operation, youngest son, Steven oversees Sales and Logistics; middle son and winemaker, George Jr. continues to work with winemaker Roger Wong, and the rest of the cellar team to capture the flavors of each vintage and eldest son Robert manages the daily operations of the winery.

Perched above Okanagan Lake with stunning panoramic views of mountains, vineyards and the lake, Gray Monk Estate Winery offers guests a true taste, or sip, of the Okanagan lifestyle. With a bustling wine boutique, a full service banquet facility and a world-class restaurant, the winery is equipped to host guests for all occasions.

From their cherished vineyard near Latitude 50 – a trail blazing family winery has led the way, helping to shape the "BC Wine World" enjoyed today.

Here are the different Gray Monk wines we carry at 30th Street Liquor Store,

This rich full bodied red wine is made of grapes grown in the south Okanagan Valley. Extra time on the vine and aging in new French oak barrels has yielded flavours of ripe cherry, plums and a delicate hint of cedar.

"Peppery, roasted bell pepper, spicy, coffee, smoky, cassis, black olive, cranberry aromas. Dry, elegant, fresh palate with some light tannins. Good effort!" - Tony Gismondi (Vancouver Sun)

$27.50 - 13%

The grapes used in the Odyssey Series Merlot were
harvested from two vineyards in the Oliver area in October 2013. A specific red wine yeast was employed to produce robust flavours in the wine. The wine was aged in oak for more than 12 months and then bottled in February 2015.

The deep purple hue of this wine signals that this is a bold Merlot. The complex aroma includes blueberries, dark plums and nutmeg. The bold, ripe flavours include black cherries, with lingering tastes of spice and licorice. The firm finish signals this as a wine worthy of aging for several more years. It is a wine for full flavoured meat and cheese dishes.

A light nose of dusty leather, red currants and plum pudding. A nice balance between the acids and tannins.  - Brad Royale

$22.25 - 13.7%

Our reserve series now includes the Odyssey Meritage.
This full bodied wine is composed of the three traditional varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and  Cabernet Franc, all grown in the South Okanagan Valley. Aged in new French oak barrels, the result is flavours reminiscent of blackberry jam with a hint of vanilla lending it well to pairing with lamb and beef dishes.

"Lots of dark fruit, spice, soft acid, spicy firm tannins. Great texture. " - Jim Martin

$32.00 - 13.7%

The Chardonnay grapes were picked in October from vineyards in both the north and south Okanagan. This Chardonnay was fermented entirely in stainless steel and without malolactic fermentation. Yellow green in hue, this has concentrated, layered floral and tropical aromas, which are strikingly rich. The flavours are packed with tropical fruits, tangerines and melons. The wine is luscious and full on the palate, with a long finish of sweet fruit. Served chilled with seafood or poultry.

"This big, concentrated and slightly sweet chardonnay is from vineyards from the north and south Okanagan. Tropical fruit, passionfruit, green melon and hedge fill the round, soft palate, one that is clipped short on the finish. Simple juice, chill well, drink now." - Treve Ring

$15.50 - 13.4%

The Ehrenfelser grapes originate from the Gray Monk vineyard in the Okanagan Valley. Harvested in October and cool fermented to retain maximum flavours. Our Ehrenfelser was left to mature on the vine later than normal to gain maximum intense aromatic flavours. A delicate citrus nose and a pronounced apricot flavour that finishes in a medium sweet yet well balanced wine. Food matches: soft cheeses, fresh fruits, lobster and custard desserts.

"Classic Ehrenfelser with intense aromatic fruity and floral notes like pears and peaches in syrup and some apple." - Rhys Pender

$18.25 - 11.2%

The fruit for the Gewurztraminer was harvested from vineyards in both Kelowna and Kaleden at an average of 23 Brix. The juice was left in contact with the skins for an extended period of time in order to enhance varietal qualities. The juice was then cool fermented in stainless steel tanks and finished in an off-dry style. Yellow green in hue, this wine has distinctive and powerful aromas of herbal spice, fresh melon and ripe peaches. The flavours are exceptionally complex, showing notes of lichee, melon, tropical fruits and even a suggestion of Earl Grey tea. The finish is crisp and fresh, with notes of spice that linger on the palate. Serve chilled, this wine is appealing on its own, with salads or Asian cuisines.

"You can set you watch by this ripe, round, generous Gewürztraminer that opens with a squeeze of grapefruit acidity to keep its off-dry demeanour quite fresh. Kiwi, lychee, juicy melon and fragrant florals are spiced with crystalline ginger. A cool ferment in stainless steel and attention to picking keeps the alcohol in check at 13.5 per cent. A charmer this vintage, and good value too. Stock up and consider serving this with roast turkey. 88/100 points."
- Tony Gismondi

$15.25 - 13.5%

The Kerner grapes originate from two distinct vineyards in the Okanagan Valley. Harvested in October 2015 and cool fermented to retain maximum flavours. Lemon in hue, this wine's layered aroma suggests ripe peaches and spiced pears. The complex flavours range from butter to lemon tarts. Subtly light on the palate, this wine finishes with delicate elegance and finesse, with a hint of natural sweetness. Served chilled, this wine is attractive on its own, with salads and fresh fruits and with fresh salmon with hollandais.

"A blend of two vineyards, this kerner might surprise if you're not aware of its 53 g/l of residual sugar. Dried herbs, stalk and stone on the nose, before an earthy, citrus, perfumed apricot palate. Medium sweet, with juicy citrus peel acidity to carry all the sugar. Pair this with sweeter Indian curries or fruit salad." - Treve Ring

$17.00 - 10.9%

The Pinot Auxerrois grapes were primarily grown in our own Gray Monk vineyards. The grapes were harvested at perfect readiness and great flavours. Pale lemon in colour, this wine has a fruity aroma with muted notes of lime. The complex layers of fruit flavour suggest peaches and sweetened rhubarb with a refreshing underlying acidity. Served chilled, this wine is delicious on its own, with salads, seafood or poultry.

"Next to Noir, Gris and Blanc, Auxerrois is the least-known of the Pinots. Gray Monk brought Pinot Auxerrois vines to BC from Alsace in the 1970s, and they use the grapes to make a lively, aromatic and fruity white perfect for these salad days of summer."- Taste Magazine

$15.25 - 13%

The grapes used in the Pinot Gris were selected from vineyards in the northern Okanagan Valley. The grapes were picked at over 22 Brix. The wine did not undergo malolactic fermentation in order to retain maximum freshness. The wine was fermented in stainless steel tank.

"The wine shows a delicate bronze blush in the glass. It has aromas of fine herbs, citrus and citrus peal. On the palate, the wine has a luscious texture with flavours of pear, apple and white peach. The wine is well balanced, with the residual sweetness plumping up the fruit in the classic Gray Monk style. 90 points."
- John Schreiner

$16.00 - 13.4%

With a hue of burnished lemon gold, this wine has a squeeze of fresh lime in its full fruity aroma. It is lively and fresh on the palate, with flavours of green apples and limes. The clean, tangy finish is persistent. Serve this versatile wine chilled on its own or with a wide range of foods from salads to sushi.

"Another impressive release of riesling from Gray Monk. It opens with peachy, lemon and green apple aromas. The palate is all freshness and minerality with more green fruits, lemongrass and mineral characters. Seafood, sushi, roast chicken...just about anything works here. This wine has the distinction of being the top scoring riesling, top Canadian wine and best wine in the $15-$25 category at the WineAlign 2013 World Wine Awards. Well done. 89/100 points."
- Tony Gismondi

                                                                                                                  $14.25 - 11.1%

This wine is the personal favourite of Gray Monk
co-proprietor, Trudy Heiss. Elegant in appearance with honey blonde and light straw hues, the wine has a layered aroma of rose petals, spice and grapefruit with flavours of pink grapefruit and tangerine. Medium-bodied and supple in texture, the wine has a fresh and lively finish. Off-dry but well-balanced, it should be served chilled as an aperitif.

"Fresh spicy, floral, ginger, muscat, peach skin, citrus, sausage aroma. Fresh, crisp, delicate, off dry palate with mineral, floral, honey, grapefruit, ginger, sausage and grass flavours. Elegant, fun style to have with sushi or Chinese food. This wine has been consistently well made for decades." - Anthony Gismondi & Stuart Tobe

$17.35 - 10.5%

Gray Monk’s own vineyard provided the grapes for the Rotberger. Mash from the grapes underwent a 9-day fermentation in stainless steel tanks with two days on the skins for colour. To maximize the fruit flavours strict temperature control was employed during the fermentation process. This wine dances in the glass with its dark rose petal hue. The penetrating aroma shows spice, raspberry and currant notes, leading to flavours of spiced cherries and cranberries with linger on the long, lively finish. The ample flavours and full, firm texture herald a wine that is proud to be a true rosé. Serve chilled during al fresco luncheons and picnics with a wide selection of foods including pasta, turkey and pork.

"Earthy, mineral, red licorice and candied berry aromas with some rubbery streaks. Sweet, soft and round with papery, mineral, cherry, strawberry flavours and a slightly acidic finish. Like white zinfandel with colour." - Anthony Gismondi & Stuart Tobe

$16.00 - 12.6%

Grapes from the southern Okanagan Valley were used for the 2013 Cabernet Merlot. The juice underwent malolactic fermentation for 2-3 weeks and was then aged in French and American oak barrels for 12 months. Before bottling, the wine went through fining and minimal filtration to enhance varietal characteristics.Rich ruby colour with aromas of black cherry, black currant, vanilla, plum and bell pepper. A hint of smoke leads to a medium body with a rich flavour and a touch of vanilla spice oak. Our new Okanagan red wine pairs well with beef, pork roast, lamb, braised veal or venison.

"A medium plus plus body red garnet blend of Cabernet and Merlot from the Okanagan Valley in BC. The juice from this wine went through malolactic fermentation for 2 to 3 weeks and was aged in American and French oak for 12 months. Aromas of dark ripe red stone fruit, red cherry vanilla licorice and toasted cedar were surprisingly potent. This wine exhibits a smooth texture notorious with Merlot with flavors of black currant jelly and rich fig vanilla fruitcake. The finish is bright with good acidity, smoke and lightly charred jalapeno. I’m smitten with this wine, I would enjoy this pretty much anywhere on any given day." - Lise Gagne

$18.25 - 13.4%

Grapes for the Pinot Noir came from various vineyards throughout the Okanagan Valley. After going through malolactic fermentation the wine was barrel aged in French oak. Fermentation temperature was carefully monitored for optimum development. Burgundy in colour, this wine has a fine aroma of blackberries and rose petals. There is a hint of raspberry in the flavour. Decanting this wine brings out the characteristic silky texture of Pinot Noir. Served slightly cool, this is excellent with salmon as well as red meats and cheese.

Forest berries and cedar roasted spices frame this welcoming and warm pinot noir, sourced from plots throughout the Okanagan Valley. Earthy and autumnal, with a bump of sugar and lightly sanded tannins supporting ripe cherry, rhubarb compote, red currant, cola and black pepper spicing. Finishes with some heat; best poured with pork sandwiches or salmon burgers.

$16.25 - 11.8%
